Chelsea advanced to the FA Cup semi-finals in emphatic style, dismantling Port Vale 7-0 at Stamford Bridge, effectively ending the visitors’ fairytale run in the tournament.
Currently languishing at the bottom of League One, 15 points adrift of safety, Port Vale reached the FA Cup quarter-finals for the first time in 72 years after eliminating Premier League side Sunderland. However, their remarkable journey met a harsh reality against Chelsea’s star-studded squad, which included eight players signed on free transfers and two on loan.
The match got off to a stunning start for Chelsea, who extinguished any hopes of an upset within the first minute. Jorrel Hato opened the scoring just 64 seconds in, capitalising on Port Vale’s failure to clear a corner.
Despite the early setback, the 6,000 passionate fans in the Shed End rallied behind their team, who initially responded well. However, the contest effectively ended in the 25th minute when Joao Pedro skillfully turned Kyle John in the penalty area before slotting the ball past keeper Joe Gauci.
Three minutes before half-time, Chelsea extended their lead when Gauci parried Malo Gusto’s cross, only for Cole Palmer to capitalise on the rebound, scoring as the ball deflected off Jordan Lawrence-Gabriel.
With the match now a case of damage limitation for Jon Brady’s side, Chelsea continued to dominate. Tosin Adarabioyo headed in the fourth goal just after the hour mark, meeting a well-placed cross from Gusto.
As Vale’s spirits waned, Andrey Santos added a fifth with a header from the far post following an Estevao Willian corner. Estevao then got on the scoresheet himself eight minutes from the end, netting after Alejandro Garnacho struck the post; the goal was confirmed after a lengthy VAR check for offside.
Garnacho capped off the rout with a penalty in stoppage time, sealing an emphatic victory for Chelsea.
This commanding win is particularly significant for head coach Liam Rosenior, who can now prepare for a Wembley appearance after a challenging run of four consecutive defeats. The match also followed the announcement of a two-match suspension for Enzo Fernandez, who had publicly questioned his future at the club.
