Chelsea Football Club have announced a staggering pre-tax loss of £262 million for the 2024-25 season, marking the largest deficit in Premier League history. This figure surpasses the previous record held by Manchester City, who reported losses of £179.5 million in 2011.
Despite this financial setback, Chelsea generated £490.9 million in revenue, the second highest in the club’s history. During the 2024-25 season, the Blues secured victories in both the UEFA Conference League and the Club World Cup, finishing fourth in the Premier League.
The club maintains that it remains compliant with financial regulations, including the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), which permit losses of up to £105 million over a three-year period. It is important to note that the figures used for this calculation differ from the pure pre-tax loss.
Since the BlueCo takeover in 2022, Chelsea has spent over £1 billion on player acquisitions, focusing on younger talent with long-term contracts.
Earlier in the season, UEFA imposed a £26.7 million fine on the club for breaching squad-cost ratio rules and is currently monitoring Chelsea over a three-year period. The reported losses include various fines, including a £10.75 million sanction from the Premier League related to agent payments made during Roman Abramovich’s ownership, as well as write-offs for high-profile players such as Raheem Sterling, who was released, and Mykhailo Mudryk, who is under investigation.
