The Bayelsa Government has taken action following reports of a marriage involving a four-year-old girl and a 54-year-old man in Akeddei community, Sagbama Local Government Area. The state government’s intervention comes in response to concerns over the illegal marriage, considered unacceptable and against the principles of justice and fairness.

In a joint statement from Dr. Dise Ogbise-Goddy and Mr. Paniebi Jacob of the Ministry of Women Affairs, Children, and Social Development, the government expressed disapproval of the tradition-based union. They acknowledged a complaint from the DO Foundation, a child rights advocacy group, and summoned community leaders to address the issue promptly.

The government reaffirmed its stance against child marriage, stressing the passage of the Bayelsa State Child Rights Law. Collaborating with the state Human Rights Commission and local NGOs like FIDA and DO Foundation, they aim to prevent such incidents and ensure the protection of children in Bayelsa State.

Allegedly, the marriage was orchestrated by the girl’s parents, who claimed the man was her deceased husband from a past life. Reportedly, the child asserted that marrying her previous husband was crucial; otherwise, she would peacefully depart from the community.
