China and Nigeria have strengthened collaboration in the media landscape to promote cultural exchanges and enhance their ties following the recently concluded Forum For China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in Beijing.

Indications of this development emerged during the events organised by the China Media Group (CMG) in Abuja on Tuesday to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of China, with the theme “Written in the Sky: My China Story.”

In his remarks, Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said that CMG’s initiative represents a significant effort to strengthen the bonds between Nigeria and China through cultural and linguistic exchange.

Idris, represented by the Director of Public Relations and Protocol, Suleiman Haruna, said the partnership must also be geared towards tackling the growing threat of misinformation and disinformation by leveraging modern communication channels available in both nations.

He said, “The role of media outlets in guiding society is vital and far-reaching. They promote mutual understanding, foster progress, and advance societal, economic, and cultural domains.

“Nigeria and China have already made significant strides in this spirit of cooperation. During the recently concluded Forum of China- Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), our two nations signed many agreements to enhance our bilateral relations. Some of these agreements are related to media exchange and collaboration; these directly relate to our partnership with the China Media Group.

“Nigeria and China share a long and fruitful history, and I am optimistic that our relationship will continue to thrive in the years to come.”

In his remarks, the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, emphasised that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent state visit to China and the FOCAC summit were a great success, stressing that they witnessed the signing of many bilateral agreements.

“The relationship between China and Africa will continue to grow from strength to strength. We will continue to play a great role in improving the livelihood of China and Africa. So, I am happy with this special event by the China Media Group, tagged ‘Written in the Sky: My China Story’.”

The Chairman of the House Committee on Nigeria-China Relations, Hon Jafaru Yakubu, reiterated that China’s commitment to cultural exchange and people-to-people diplomacy has been invaluable.

“By working together, we can build a brighter future for our two nations and contribute to a more peaceful and prosperous world,” he added.
