China has restated its support for Nigeria’s sovereignty and internal stability, pledging deeper security cooperation with the country.

The assurance followed a meeting between China’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, and the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, in Abuja.

In a post on X, Ambassador Dunhai said relations between both nations have strengthened significantly since President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to China and participation in the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation last year.

Dunhai noted that practical cooperation across various sectors has produced “fruitful outcomes,” supporting Nigeria’s socioeconomic development and improving citizens’ livelihoods.

The envoy stressed that China “firmly supports the Nigerian government in leading its people on a development path that fits Nigeria’s national realities,” while opposing “any country’s interference in other countries’ internal affairs under the pretext of religion and human rights.”

Dunhai further condemned “the wanton threat of sanction and use of force” by the Nigerian government, assuring that China remains committed to assisting Nigeria in combating terrorism and maintaining domestic stability.

The meeting held amid heightened diplomatic tension following US President Donald Trump’s designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” and threats of a possible US military intervention over an alleged ongoing Christian Genocide in the country.
