China emerged as the most popular summer travel destination for Nigerians, according to the latest passenger data released by Emirates, which showed that more than 44,000 travellers flew from Nigeria on the airline’s network between May 1 and August 31, 2025.
The report, which provides insights into the travel preferences of Nigerians ahead of the 2026 summer season, revealed that 11,530 passengers travelled to China during the period, making it the leading destination among Emirates’ Nigerian passengers.
Guangzhou accounted for nearly 80 per cent of all travel to mainland China, reaffirming its status as a key commercial hub for Nigerian entrepreneurs, importers and business travellers. Other Chinese cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen also attracted significant traffic, highlighting the growing economic and business ties between Nigeria and China.
Dubai ranked among the most sought-after destinations, with more than 6,370 Nigerians travelling to the city for shopping, leisure, business and family holidays.
The airline said Dubai continues to strengthen its appeal as a year-round destination while serving as a strategic gateway to hundreds of cities across the Emirates network.
The United Kingdom also witnessed strong demand, receiving more than 5,850 passengers from Nigeria during the summer period.
London Heathrow remained the busiest gateway, welcoming over 2,500 travellers, representing more than 43 per cent of all UK-bound passengers. Manchester also attracted substantial traffic, driven largely by business travel and visits to the Nigerian diaspora.
The United States remained a preferred long-haul destination, with about 2,500 passengers travelling through Emirates to its 11 U.S. gateways. New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport accounted for almost one-third of U.S.-bound travellers, while Houston, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Chicago and Boston also featured prominently.
Beyond these destinations, Nigerians travelled to several cities across Asia, Europe and Oceania, including Delhi, Mumbai, Medina, Sydney, Christchurch, Mauritius and Seychelles, reflecting a diverse mix of business, education, tourism, religious pilgrimage and family-related travel.
The report also highlighted changing travel patterns among Nigerians, with solo travel continuing to gain momentum.
According to Emirates, more than 61 per cent of Nigerian passengers travelled alone during the period, making independent travellers the largest customer segment. Families accounted for 17 per cent of passengers, while couples represented 12 per cent.
The airline attributed the trend to growing confidence among Nigerians in exploring international destinations independently.
Emirates said it continues to enhance the customer experience by offering regionally inspired cuisine, award-winning hospitality and more than 6,500 entertainment channels through its ice inflight entertainment system.
Passengers connecting through Dubai can also enjoy the airline’s Premium Economy cabin on selected Airbus A380, Airbus A350 and Boeing 777 aircraft serving destinations including China, the United Kingdom and the United States. The cabin features spacious leather seats, upgraded dining services and enhanced comfort.
For premium travellers, Emirates’ First Class Private Suites on selected A380 aircraft offer private suites, gourmet dining, an exclusive onboard lounge and the airline’s signature Shower Spa.
Looking ahead to the 2026 summer travel season, Emirates said the latest passenger data underscores Nigeria’s growing importance within its African network as increasing numbers of Nigerians travel abroad for business, education, tourism, religious activities and family engagements through its global hub in Dubai.
