Cholera: Nigeria Records 7,663 Suspected Cases, 216 Deaths — NCDC

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has said that 7,663 suspected cases of cholera and 216 deaths have been recorded across the country since the beginning of 2024.

This was contained in the Cholera Epidemiological report for week 36, presented by NCDC during a press briefing on Wednesday in Abuja.

“In week 36, there were 141 suspected cases and one death with a case fatality rate of 0.7 percemt. These were reported in Katsina, Lagos, Kano, Jigawa and Adamawa states, across 19 LGAs.

“Cumulatively from week one to 36, 2024, 216 deaths have been reported with a case fatality rate (CFR) of 2.8 percent from 7,663 suspected cases,” the report stated.

It showed that 35 States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have recorded at least one suspected case across 280 LGAs, adding that 89 per cent of all suspected cases were reported from 10 states: Lagos 58 per cent; Bayelsa seven per cent, Katsina six per cent, Jigawa five per cent, Zamfara three per cent, Ebonyi three per cent; Rivers two per cent, Abia two per cent, Ogun two percent and Imo one per cent.

The report further revealed that 15 LGAs account for 57 per cent of all cases, with Lagos Island LGA of Lagos State contributing the highest, eight per cent.

Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae.
