Christa Pike, the Tennessee death row inmate who survived a botched execution last week, is battling pneumonia and is currently unable to move her arms, according to her attorneys.

Pike, 50, was left critically ill after Tennessee officials administered two doses of the lethal-injection drug pentobarbital during an attempted execution on September 30.

She was taken to hospital unconscious and placed on a ventilator, where she remained for several days.

Her legal team said Pike unexpectedly regained consciousness and began speaking on Tuesday, October 6, after they had been told she was believed to be brain-dead and that life support would be withdrawn.

Her attorney, Randy Spivey, said Pike was confused when she regained consciousness but gradually began recalling details of the execution attempt.

However, her medical condition remains serious.

According to her lawyers, Pike is suffering from pneumonia, has a blood clot in one arm, is unable to swallow and has no current function in her arms or hands. Her arms and hands are reportedly severely swollen following the failed injection.

“We don’t know what function she will regain,” Spivey said, describing the swelling in her hands as extraordinary.

Pike’s attorneys have blamed problems establishing intravenous access for the botched procedure, saying her known medical conditions, including small veins and a blood disorder, had previously raised concerns about the difficulty of inserting an IV.

They alleged that the lethal drug entered surrounding tissue rather than being properly delivered into her bloodstream, causing severe injuries to her arms.

The failed execution has prompted an investigation by Tennessee authorities. Governor Bill Lee has halted the state’s remaining scheduled execution for 2026 while an independent review examines what went wrong.

A Tennessee judge has also ordered state officials to preserve evidence connected to the execution attempt, including drugs, IV lines, needles, medical supplies, restraints and records relating to the procedure.

Pike’s survival is unprecedented in the modern US death penalty era. According to the Death Penalty Information Center, she is the only person known to have survived after actually receiving lethal-injection chemicals during an execution attempt.

Pike was sentenced to death for the 1995 torture and murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, a crime committed when Pike was 18.

For now, Pike remains in hospital as her attorneys push for her death sentence to be commuted to life imprisonment and continue legal challenges surrounding the failed execution.

Her condition remains uncertain, with doctors yet to determine how much function she may eventually regain in her arms.
