In the spirit of Christmas, the Benue State government has distributed relief materials to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to enable them to feel the impact of the celebration.

The executive secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency, (SEMA) Dr. Emmanuel  Shior who disclosed this during the flag-off of the distribution in Makurdi, yesterday said that items distributed include, food and non- food materials.

He added that the agency has also received relief materials from the senator representing Benue North West senatorial district and the presidential committee on flooding.  Sen. Orker Jev which will also be shared across the state.

Shior also lamented the persistent attacks on communities in the state which has resulted in high increase of displaced persons even as he decried continuous neglect from the federal government.

“The population of IDPs keeps swelling because attackers usually come in during the harmattan to occupy our land.  The Benue State government has borne the burden of taking care of the IDPs. We hope another government will address the issues and challenges of the IDPs.

“We are working with humanitarian partners and other spirited individuals to see how we can return them to their homes,” Shior said.
