The Civil Resource Development and Documentation Centre (CIRDDOC), a renowned non-governmental organisation based in Nigeria is to launch its fourth sub-National (States) budget transparency survey port.
The Sub-National Budget Transparency Survey (SNBTS) is a project aimed at instilling transparency in budgeting and budget process across the 36 states of the federation, it focuses on four key indicators; public availability of budget information, public participation in the budget process, strength of the oversight institutions and public availability of procurement information.
Funded by Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, (FCDO / UKAID), this survey will highlight the performance of states in the country using the four key indices.
The pilot sub-national (states) budget transparency survey project was conducted in 2012, which covered 15 states in Nigeria.
The 2023 event themed “Trends in Finance Management at sub-national levels holds at the Abuja Continental Hotel (former Sheraton Hotel) on Tuesday June 27, 2023. This year’s theme emphasises the importance of tracking evolving financial practices and identifying emerging trends in budget management. By evaluating these trends, CIRDDOC seeks to identify areas of improvement and highlight best practices that can be adopted by states to enhance financial transparency and accountability.
Th event is expected to be attended by representatives of the FCDO, World Bank, Nigerian Governors Forum, OGP, funding partners, State Directors of budget, serving Governors, former Governors, Finance Commissioners, and Civil Society Organisations.
According to National Coordinator of CIRDDOC, Ralph Ndigwe “CIRDDOC developed the Nigerian States Budget Transparency Survey (SNBTS) to analyse how transparent, open, and participatory budget and procurement processes are in Nigerian states. All 36 states are evaluated to see how much budget information is provided, spaces and mechanisms for public participation throughout the budget process, and how robust and transparent the procurement process is in the states.
Since its establishment in 1996, CIRDDOC has been actively working towards promoting and defending human rights and women’s human rights. The organization also focuses on critical issues such as good governance, gender equality, and the rule of law in Nigeria which contributes to positive social change and nation-building in Nigeria.
