The Democracy Watch Initiative has called for an independent inquiry into allegations linking the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, with bandit groups operating in parts of the country.
The civil society organisation said the allegations, which have featured in recent public discourse, warrant careful examination in view of the persistent security challenges posed by banditry across several states.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by its Director of Strategic Communication, Dr Tunji O. Bamidele, the group said addressing the allegations transparently would help strengthen public confidence in governance and the nation’s security institutions.
According to the organisation, banditry has continued to affect lives, livelihoods and community stability, making it important for authorities to respond clearly to issues that raise public concern.
“The integrity of leadership is central to sustaining public trust. Where allegations of this nature arise, it is important that they are examined through appropriate and impartial processes,” the statement said.
The group noted that clarifying the issues surrounding the allegations would also support the morale of security personnel engaged in efforts to safeguard lives and property.
It called on relevant authorities to consider setting up an independent inquiry panel comprising legal experts, civil society representatives and security analysts, with assurances of impartiality and professionalism.
The organisation further urged that the outcome of any inquiry be made public within a reasonable timeframe to promote openness and accountability.
In addition, it encouraged the protection of individuals who may provide information relevant to the inquiry and called for continued review of security strategies aimed at addressing banditry nationwide.
The Democracy Watch Initiative said an independent inquiry would help provide clarity on the allegations and reinforce the government’s commitment to transparency, accountability and the rule of law.
