Kano State government has said its climate change policy when implemented would boost the economy, enhance security and improve the livelihoods of people.
The commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahiru Hashim, made this known during a Technical Review meeting of the draft Climate Change Policy (CCP) with members of the Technical Committee, organised by the ministry in collaboration with Partnership for Agile Governance and Climate Engagement (PACE).
Represented by the ministry’s director of Climate Change, Dr. Umar Anka, the commissioner said the policy would also improve the low ranking and climate change governance of the state to a single-digit ranking in the Federal Ministry of Environment’s assessment.
“The overall goal is to improve the general welfare of humanity in Kano State, neighboring countries, and the globe. Climate change is a global issue that starts locally. Actions in Kano State can positively impact global climate change,” he noted.
Dr. Hashim also added that, the policy and implementation framework will enable non-state actors to implement projects pointing out that, the state has budgeted funds for climate change initiatives with a view to having a sustainable environment.
Earlier in his remarks, the state PACE team lead, Auwalu Hamza, said the policy framework and its corresponding implementation plan was formulated in collaboration with stakeholders from both governmental and non-governmental entities.
He said the contents of the implementation plan is a result of inputs from various technical working groups, as such, the compilation is presented back to stakeholders for review and validation aimed at ensuring it aligns with their input.
