Connected Development (CODE), a civil society organisation, has unveiled a $5 million grant to support journalists in reporting on the ethical and impactful use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Nigeria.

The initiative was unveiled on Tuesday at a media dialogue and the official launch of the AI Reporting Initiative in Abuja.

Speaking at the event, CODE’s Chief Executive Officer, Hamzat Lawal, emphasised the transformative power of AI in governance, public service delivery, and accountability. He noted that while AI presents immense opportunities, it also comes with risks such as algorithmic bias, data privacy concerns, and unequal access to public services.

“As an organisation, we recognise the media’s crucial role in shaping public discourse and policy direction. This is why we are committing $5 million over the next five years to support journalists in investigating AI-driven solutions and challenges within Nigeria’s development landscape,” he said.

The initiative aims to strengthen media capacity by providing seed grants, training, and research opportunities for journalists to explore AI’s role in various sectors, including health, education, water sanitation and hygiene (WASH), and transparency and accountability.

The launch brought together media professionals, civil society organisations, and technology experts to discuss how AI could be leveraged for social progress while ensuring transparency, accountability, and inclusivity in its application.

CODE’s leadership reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for legislation that ensures AI serves the public interest while protecting citizens from potential harm.

The AI Reporting Initiative is expected to provide a platform for journalists to drive national conversations on ethical AI use and its implications for the country’s development.
