The Federal Character Commission (FCC) has restated its commitment to promoting equity, fairness, and national unity, which aligns with its constitutional mandate to ensure inclusion across Nigeria’s public institutions.
Acting Chairman of the Commission, Hon Kayode Oladele, gave the assurance on Thursday in Abuja at the FCC’s Public Affairs and Communications Week closing ceremony, where he urged Nigerians to see diversity as a source of national strength rather than division.
“In brotherhood we stand, that was the spirit at our independence, and it remains the same today,” Oladele said. “What binds us together as a nation is a cord that cannot be broken, the unity that comes from fairness, equity, and a shared sense of belonging.”
He explained that the week-long activities, which featured exhibitions, cultural displays, and interactive sessions, were aimed at deepening public understanding of the Federal Character principle and fostering trust in governance.
“When citizens understand our mandate, they are more likely to support it,” he noted. “And when people trust the fairness of recruitment, representation, and resource distribution, they become partners in nation-building.”
Oladele emphasised that public communication remains central to the Commission’s work, bridging the FCC and the Nigerian people. He commended the Public Affairs and Communications Department for its “creativity and dedication,” adding that effective communication can “inspire confidence, foster national unity, and reinforce the Commission’s role as a pillar of equity and inclusion.”
Placing the Commission’s role within President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, Oladele described the FCC as “at the very heart” of the administration’s vision to rebuild trust, ensure transparency, and guarantee inclusion for all Nigerians.
“Every table of appointment we monitor, every compliance certificate we issue, and every sensitisation campaign we conduct contribute to renewing the people’s hope in Nigeria’s promise of a better future,” he said.
He urged Commission staff to carry the week’s lessons beyond the conference hall, calling for stronger engagement with Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), improved internal coordination, and more proactive communication.
“Every act of fairness strengthens national unity,” Oladele said. “Every message we share can promote understanding, and every Nigerian we reach brings us closer to a more equal and just society.”
He concluded by reaffirming the FCC’s resolve to uphold transparency and inclusion in all its operations. “When we celebrate our differences instead of fearing them, we build a stronger nation. When we communicate truthfully, we build trust. And when every Nigerian feels respected, we secure the foundation of our unity,” he said.
