Commission Wants Speedy Completion Of N700m River Gurara Embankment Project

The managing director of National Hydro-Electric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC), Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa, has called for speedy completion of the N700 million ongoing River Gurara embankment construction against flood in Muye and other communities in Lapai local government area of Niger State.

Yelwa, who was represented by HYPPADEC director of Finance and Administration, Dr Haruna Jimoh Gabi, made the call during the commission’s visit to ascertain the level of work.

He expressed satisfaction with work done so far but insisted that the contractor should not deviate from the standard, saying that the total contract sum was N700 million and the contractor had been adequately mobilised to avoid unnecessary delay or request for variations.

He noted that the project which has encountered delay due to technical issues was meant to be completed within six months and therefore called on the contractor and project consultant to work together for speedy progress.

He recalled that members of the community had initially expressed fears about the project, following two previous unsuccessful attempts to construct an embankment in the area.

He reassured the people that N-HYPPADEC had the experience and capacity to deliver the project successfully, noting that the commission had put the necessary measures in place to ensure its timely completion.

‎A member of the House of Representatives representing Agaie/Lapai federal constituency, Abdullahi Mahmud who was also on the team expressed joy over the intervention, stating that he was sure of the speedy completion of the project.

The lawmaker urged his constituents to remain patient and appreciate the efforts being made by the Federal Government and N-HYPPADEC to ensure the completion of the project to overcome the flooding threats.

‎The Amana of Muye, Alhaji Salihu Mohammed thanked the management of HYPPADEC for their quick response and called on the federal government to assist in funding the River Gurara embankment project and make it a top priority for the safety and development of the community.
