Ahead of the forthcoming local government elections slated for October 5, 2024, in Akwa Ibom State, the commissioner for Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Chief Uno Etim Uno, has resigned from the State Executive Council (SEC), and handed over to the Permanent Secretary pending the appointment of his replacement by governor Umo Eno, LEADERSHIP gathered on Tuesday.
Uno was nominated to fly the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) flag as its chairmanship candidate for Urueofong/Oruko LGA at last month’s primaries.
Besides, some interim chairmen favoured by the zoning arrangement, including Uwemedimo Udo (Uyo); Uko Umoh (Etinan); Inibehe Umah (Ini), and others, as well councillors in the outgoing caretaker administration across the 31 LGAs, have all resigned to begin consultations and campaigns for the polls proper.
Towards securing victories for its candidates across the 369 wards, the ruling PDP has concluded plans to kick – off campaigns on Thursday, September 12, 2024, according to the party’s publicity secretary, Comrade Borono Bassey, who announced this on behalf of the state chairman, Elder Aniekan Akpan.
“This is to notify the chairmanship and councillorship candidates of our party as well as their teeming supporters and indeed all members of the party that the formal flag-off of campaigns for the forthcoming LGA elections have been slated to hold Thursday at the Uyo Township Stadium,” he stated.
According to the chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC), Elder Aniedi Ikoiwak, the PDP will slug it out with no fewer than 12 other political parties already cleared for the contest.
He vowed that the October 5 date would remain sacrosanct as nonsensitive materials had already been moved to the 31 LGAs headquarters in readiness for the exercise, with thousands of ad hoc staff for the polls currently training.
