Commonwealth Games: Amusan, Enekwechi, Ogazi Lead Team Nigeria’s Medal Hunt In Busy Thursday Programme

Team Nigeria will look to build on its impressive showing at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Thursday as some of the country’s biggest athletics stars, led by world record holder Tobi Amusan and shot put ace Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, take centre stage in one of the busiest days of the competition.

According to the athletics schedule released on Thursday by the Chairman of the Media Committee of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Maxwell Kumoye, Nigerian athletes will compete across a packed programme featuring qualification events, semi-finals and medal contests.

The day’s action begins with Jami Schlueter launching his campaign in the men’s decathlon. He will contest the 100 metres before returning later for the long jump and shot put as he seeks to accumulate valuable points in the gruelling multi-event competition.

African champion Chinecherem Nnamdi will also be in action during the morning session, aiming to secure qualification for the men’s javelin throw final.

All eyes, however, will be on Amusan as the world record holder opens her women’s 100 metres hurdles campaign in the preliminary heats. The Nigerian sprint hurdler will be targeting a comfortable passage into the final later in the day as she bids for another Commonwealth Games title.

Attention will then shift to the women’s 400 metres semi-finals, where Patience Okon-George, Esther Elo Joseph and Ella Onojuvwevwo will attempt to secure places in the final and keep Nigeria’s medal hopes alive.

In the men’s 400 metres, Samuel Ogazi and Edidiong Udo will also chase qualification for the final after producing encouraging performances in the opening round.

Nigeria’s medal aspirations will gather momentum in the evening session when Enekwechi competes in the men’s shot put final. The experienced thrower will be hoping to deliver another podium finish for Team Nigeria.

Sprint star Udodi Onwuzurike will feature in the men’s 200 metres semi-finals after progressing from the heats, while Obi Jennifer Chukwuka and Olayinka Olajide will contest the women’s 200 metres semi-finals with places in the final at stake.

In the para-athletics events, Unyima Uwak will compete in the women’s T47 100 metres final, while Obiageri Amaechi will line up in the women’s discus throw final as Nigeria continues its pursuit of medals across different disciplines.

Away from the athletics arena, Oyindamola Tijani will represent Nigeria in the men’s tandem B 1,000 metres time trial final in track cycling.

If Amusan advances from the morning heats as expected, she will return later on Thursday for the women’s 100 metres hurdles final, where she will seek to strengthen her legacy with another Commonwealth Games gold medal.

With finals, semi-finals and qualification events spread throughout the day, Team Nigeria faces one of its most demanding schedules of the Games, with several of its leading athletes expected to spearhead the nation’s bid for more medals in Glasgow.
