Former secretary general of the Arewa Consultative Forum, (ACF), Anthony Sani, has described the appointment of the new Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman, Prof. Ojo Amupitan (SAN) as timely to prepare for 2027 elections, calling on him to conduct all elections on same day.
Sani explained that conducting all elections on same day would reduce cost and prevent band wagon effect.
Reacting to the appointment of the new INEC chairman, Sani prayed that Prof. Amupitan has what it takes to conduct free, fair and transparent elections in 2027.
He said, ”The nomination of new chairman of INEC by President Bola Tinubu is timely, considering the need for INEC to prepare for elections coming up in 2027.Any delay may not be helpful. We pray the nominee has what it takes to conduct elections fairly, creditably, transparently and justly.
“We also pray he would consider the possibility of conducting all elections on the same day in order to reduce cost and prevent band wagon effect. Kenya conducts all elections on the same day, and it is working fine.
“In order to enthrone enduring democracy at the local level, it is our prayer that INEC would consider the possibility of expunging state electoral commission from the constitution in order to make INEC conduct local government elections.
And finally, in order to improve turn out of voters for elections, we pray INEC would consider the possibility of making voting by voting age Nigerians compulsory. Australia has tried it and it is working very well,” he said.
