A former Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu Abubakar, has ruled out the possibility of consensus to pick All Progressives Congress (APC)’s flag bearer for the forthcoming governorship election in the state.

The former police boss who is one of the key contenders in the race for the party’s ticket said nothing short of direct primary would be accepted.

He spoke in Lafia yesterday through the director, contact and moblisation of his campaign organisation, Hon. Isah Nathaniel.

Hon. Nathaniel noted that the decision of the party stakeholders, which included all the aspirants for the governorship ticket, national assembly members, two former governors of the state and others during the meeting at the state government lodge in Abuja recently still stands.

He said at the meeting, the stakeholders adopted direct primary as the only mode of choosing the standard bearer, which aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s stance on giving every party member a voice in determining the party’s flag bearer.

He pointed out that at the said meeting  Governor Abdullahi Sule assured that the process would be open, transparent and compliant with the APC constitution and Electoral Act, leaving no room for grievances.

According to him, many stakeholders were shocked when few days after the Abuja meeting the issue of preferred aspirant came up.

Nathaniel explained that while the governor has the right to pick anyone among the aspirants to support, his decision cannot in any way supersedes the stand of all stakeholders who overwhelmingly adopted direct primary in consonance with the party’s guidelines and the Electoral Act.

“It is akin to being clever by half to begin to seek dialogue or consensus by whatever name at this stage. We said no to all forms of imposition and unilateralism; we stand by due process and rules of law,” he said.
