The All Indigenous Contractors Association of Nigeria (AICAN) on Thursday afternoon announced the suspension of its ongoing protest following the Senate intervention, led by the Senate spoke person, Sen. Adeyemi Adaramodu.
The suspension notice which was released to newsmen in Abuja, was signed by the association President, Mr Jackson Ifeanyi Nwosu, and his Vice, Mr Fredrick Agada,
The contractors embarked on the peaceful protest to demand for the contract sum of the capital project it executed in 2024, which they say it is over 3 billion dollars.
Nwosu during the protest said that the association had engaged government officials, including the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun and Speaker, House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, in a series of meeting for the resolution of the matter.
He stated that the Federal Government had in September released 760 billion dollar warrant to Ministry, Department and Agency (MDAs) as a move to pay part of the money, but there was no cash backing to that effect.
He however said that the suspension of the protest between Thursday and Tuesday, Nov. 11, is a temporary measure to allow the Senate and the Federal Government to do their discussion about the payment.
According to him, if nothing is done by the Federal Government within this time limit, the contractors will continue with their protest on the street of Abuja.
The contractors President said that members would also take further action by sending letters to all Embassies and foreign agencies in Nigeria, notifying them on what Nigerian government is doing to its people.
“On this note, we are suspending our protest till Tuesday due to the meeting we had with Senate today.
“We have resolved to suspend because we pray that with the intervention of Senate, it will yield result by the grace of God.
“But, if after Tuesday nothing was done, we will return back to the street, and we will start sending our letters to different foreign agencies, Embassies, but we pray that the Senate will keep to their words,” Nwosu stressed.
