Corps members in Bayelsa State have marked the 50th anniversary of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) with a unity rally in Yenagoa, the state capital.
Despite the challenges facing the NYSC scheme over the years, the scheme has remained the champion of national unity, integration and development.
The unity rally, which was kicked off at the Peace Park, opposite Government House in Yenagoa, witnessed staff and corps members from the state commending the scheme for its achievements over the years.
While flagging off the rally, the state coordinator, Mrs Okpalifo Obiageli Charity, said the event was part of programmes put together by the directorate headquarters to celebrate the scheme.
Okpalifo said the theme, “NYSC: Five Decades of Fostering National Unity and Integration” was apt as the corps was established on May 22, 1973.
She emphasised that the NYSC has remained the champion of national unity and integration, and enjoined the corps members to uphold the virtues, values and ideals of the NYSC.
She said the NYSC since inception had provided quality service in all sectors of the economy.
She noted the contribution of the corps members in the educational, health, infrastructural and agricultural sectors in the past fifty years and scored the scheme very high in national development.
The corps liaison officer (CLO) Yenagoa, corps member Ogugua Clinton Chidera – BY/22B/2207, who spoke on behalf of the corps members, expressed happiness that they are part of this historic event marking the 50th Anniversary of the NYSC and assured that they will continue to serve under the sun or in the rain.
