Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has suspended the officers allegedly involved in unprofessional conduct with inmates in one of its custodial centres in Yobe State.
The suspension takes immediate effect and will remain in place pending the conclusion of a full-scale investigation.
A statement signed by JN Osuji Chief Superintendent of Corrections, Public Relations Officer, Nigerian Correctional Service, was made available to LEADERSHIP in Damaturu. It stated that, queries and charge sheets have been issued to other personnel to explain their involvement or otherwise in the incident.
According to the statement, the chairman of the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire & Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB) and minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, approved the suspension after receiving the preliminary investigation report.
He also reaffirmed that allegations of misconduct within any agency under the Board will not be tolerated.
He said that, the NCoS maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy for all forms of misconduct, negligence, rights violations, or inappropriate relationships between staff and inmates.
He added that, ” I will like to inform you that, any officer found culpable will face appropriate disciplinary measures and possible legal sanctions in line with established regulations.”
The statement said, the Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Sylvester Nwakuche assured the public of the service’s unwavering commitment to professionalism, integrity, and the rule of law.
He emphasised that, all correctional facilities across the country will continue to operate strictly in accordance with extant laws, ethical standards, and operational procedures.
