The national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, has attributed the prevalence of corruption in Nigeria to weak political institutions.

Ganduje stated this at a high-level meeting of political parties’ chairmen yesterday in Abuja, organised by The Kukah Centre.

He stressed the need for strong institutions to function effectively and support democracy.

The centre’s founder, Bishop Matthew Kukah, stressed the importance of learning from past mistakes to make progress.

He highlighted the need for a mechanism to ensure that the same errors are not repeated in the political sphere.

The discussion also touched on local government autonomy, with Prof Okey Ikechukwu noting that the Supreme Court’s stamp of approval marks a significant step towards grassroots development.

However, the national chairman of the Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Yusuf Dantalle, emphasised the need to address the root causes of corruption, including the centrality of money in politics.

Prof Ogoh Alubo highlighted the importance of compelling good governance through local government autonomy, while Manji Wilson recommended that political parties promote accountability and adopt a corporate governance approach.
