The Sector Skills Council for Building in Nigeria (SSCBIN), has called for federal and state governments’ support to commence issuance of certificate and licenses to workers in the informal skilled sector, also known as artisans.
The council also said it has initiated programmes that would promote apprenticeships, certification and licensing initiatives in the informal sector.
This was revealed by the president of SSCBIN, BLDR. Samson Opaluwah at an event to mark the 2024 World Youth Skills day in Abuja on Monday.
While giving details of the programme, the SSCBIN president said this was in pursuit of their core objectives and the programme would come alongside implementing the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
He further called on the federal government and sub-national governments to collaborate SSCBIN in providing the necessary support for the implementation of the RPL.
In explained that the aim of the programme is to ensure that all youth, whether educated or not, are given the opportunity to have a certificate for his prior knowledge so as to help him or her actualise the God given talents.
According to him, “Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), is an assessment vehicle that will revolutionise the informal sector of our nations’ economy by recognising the immense potentials and skills capacities that are currently not fully captured by the formal economy.
“Furthermore, with improved assessment and recognition, the quality of production will be largely enhanced thus ensuring not only a higher productivity level but also a higher quality of output from the sector.
“With this development the numerous out of school young people and adults can be skilled up to make meaningful contribution to the national economy and enhance their living standards.
“Consequently, we are working in tandem with industry partners to establish job opportunities and mentorship initiatives, equipping young individuals with the essential skills, knowledge, and mindset required to thrive in the building industry and unlock their full potential. “
