Justice Ahmed Kala of the Federal High Court in Lagos has convicted and sentenced an Edo State-born upcoming Afrobeat musician, Godspower Osahenrunmwen, to two years in prison for unlawfully dealing in Indian hemp.
Godspower, also called Joshua Igiehon by his fans, was jailed by Justice Kala after pleading guilty to a one-count charge brought against him by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The prosecutor, Abu Ibrahim, informed the court that the convict was arrested on October 30, 2025, at 2 Freedom Way, Lekki, Lagos State, where he was found to be unlawfully dealing in 77.20 kilograms of the prohibited substance.
Ibrahim, a Commander of Narcotics (NC), also told the court that the convict’s actions contravened section 11 (c) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act Cap. N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
After the prosecutor reviewed the facts of the case and tendered some exhibits, including the seized drug, the judge convicted the convict as charged.
However, his lawyer, Chief Benson Ndakara, pleaded with the court to show mercy to his client.
He urged the court to consider the early guilty plea as a sign of remorse, adding that the convict had promised not to engage in illegal activities in the future.
Before passing sentence, Justice Kala asked both the prosecutor and the defence team about the street value of the drug, which Chief Ndakara estimated at N2 million.
In his judgment, Justice Kala sentenced the convict to three years’ imprisonment. He also ordered him to pay N2 million as an alternative to the jail term.
In addition to the fine, the judge ordered the convict to perform 90 days of community service.
He also ordered that the two phones recovered from the convict be forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
