A rising music star, Ambassador Christopher Ogar, has commissioned a solar-powered borehole to provide potable water for the residents of the Ochochi community in Okpoma, Yala local government area of Cross River State.
The project, fully funded by the philanthropist, popularly known as Jay Moni, through his company, Jaytech Group of Companies Ltd, is expected to end years of hardship caused by a lack of access to potable water.
The inauguration ceremony drew community elders, women, youths and children, alongside special guests, including Dr Emaluji Michael Sunday and Mr Emmanuel Okwo, the manager of Jaytech Group.
At the event, Jay Moni said he was moved to undertake the project after watching a video showing residents fetching dirty water from a distant stream. “It was heartbreaking to see people still struggling to get clean water in the 21st century,” he said. “We cannot wait for the government alone; everyone who has the means should give back to their community.”
He urged political leaders and influential individuals from Yala and beyond to prioritise grassroots development and support initiatives that directly improve living conditions in rural areas.
“Our leaders must remain committed to providing basic infrastructure that improves lives,” he added.
In his remarks, Dr Emaluji expressed the community’s gratitude, describing the intervention as timely and life-changing. He praised Jay Moni’s swift response and generosity, noting that the borehole would greatly improve the community’s well-being.
The commissioning ended with prayers and songs of appreciation from residents, who thanked Jay Moni and prayed for God’s blessings upon him.
Earlier reports indicated that the project, estimated at ₦15 million, was conceived after Dr Emaluji informed Jay Moni about the community’s plight. Jay Moni said the initiative aligns with his belief that “charity begins at home” and reaffirmed his commitment to alleviating the suffering of locals.
