A civil society organisation known for public safety, security, and justice CLEEN Foundation has called for the review of the legal framework of the parole system in Nigeria to give room for effective implementation.

According to the organisation, the current structure of the system apart from not achieving the set objective is causing a setback for the administration of criminal justice in the country.

This was disclosed at an event organized for media practitioners in Lagos with the theme “Media presentation of the policy brief on the legal framework of the parole system in Nigeria”.

In his address at the event, Programme Director, CLEEN Foundation, Hashim Salaudeen remarked that with the introduction of the innovation which included the parole system and the provision of the new and adjusted custodial facility act there must be some element of parole introduction into the system.

He stated, “It bothers around non-compliance, and the funding gap around the challenges with oversight and most importantly, there is a weak political support, So it relates to non-existence and functionality of the parole board in various states”.

Salaudeen affirmed that this is also a major challenge that requires immediate attention and the only thing that is working is the fact that it is in the nation’s extant laws.

According to him, “In terms of those who benefit there is no record of anybody except for those who are politically exposed persons that could be said to have been a beneficiary, and perhaps those are only beneficiary under the prerogative of mercy committee not particularly the parole board, so those are the people who have benefited from the parole system”
