A civil society organisation has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to order a full-scale investigation into alleged looting and corruption during the tenure of Engr. Adokiye Tombomieye at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL).
The call came from Advocate Israel T. Ebiama, National Coordinator of United Advocates For Good Governance And Leadership, during a statement issued on Wednesday.
Ebiama stressed that the focus of any corruption probe should shift from current NNPCL CEO Mele Kyari to Tombomieye, who he claims played a central role in the alleged financial mismanagement.
He listed a number of infractions allegedly linked to Tombomieye, including looting of NNPCL funds, corruption in refinery transactions, irregularities under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), and abuse of power while heading the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC).
The group further accused Tombomieye of sidelining due processes in the award of oil and gas contracts and manipulating settlement funds.
According to the statement, “As our publications continue, more evidence will be brought to light and shared with the public.”
The group is demanding an immediate and independent probe, and prosecution if wrongdoing is confirmed.
“We demand for the immediate investigation, thorough probe, and prosecution if found guilty,” Ebiama said, stressing that while Kyari may have been the face of the NNPCL, Tombomieye was “instrumental in the alleged corruption.”
