A coalition of civil society organisations in Nigeria has lauded the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for rejecting a petition seeking the recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central.
In a joint statement issued on Wednesday, organisations including the Centre for Media and Society (CEMESO), Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), ElectHER, International Press Centre (IPC), Nigerian Women Trust Fund, TAF Africa, The Kukah Centre, and Yiaga Africa described the move as a testament to the rule of law and constitutional integrity.
The group is citing its failure to meet the constitutional threshold for verified signatures.
The petition, they noted, did not satisfy the requirements outlined in Section 69 (a) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
“We commend INEC for its decision and urge that it continues to demonstrate fidelity and respect for the rule of law in the discharge of its mandate,” the statement read.
The coalition emphasised that the recall process, enshrined in the constitution, must remain a carefully exercised democratic tool rather than a weapon for political vendettas or abuse by influential figures seeking to undermine legitimate mandates.
The groups also raised concerns over reports of coercion, inducement, and intimidation of constituents during the recall campaign.
“These underhanded tactics threaten the integrity of the recall process and infringe on the democratic rights of citizens,” they warned.
“We are calling for mechanisms to prevent partisan actors from exploiting such processes to silence dissent or target political rivals.”
Reaffirming their commitment to defending democracy, human rights, and constitutionalism, the coalition pledged solidarity with Nigerians resisting the abuse of power.
The statement said, “We continue to stand in solidarity with all Nigerians resisting the abuse of power and affirm our commitment to protecting the sanctity of the electoral mandate.”
