CSOs Finger Desperate Politicians In Rising Insecurity

Leaders of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) and Conference of Civil Society for Peace, Security and National Development have put the blame for the rising insecurity in the country on desperate politicians.

Killings and attacks on innocent citizens have escalated across the country, which have been linked to bandits, insurgents and armed herders.

At a press conference in Abuja yesterday, the CSOs leader, Ambassador Solomon Adodo, decried the deplorable security situation in the country, alleging that it was masterminded by desperate politicians scheming ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He said, “We address you with a heavy heart yet an unwavering resolve to speak up on one of the most critical challenges confronting our beloved nation. Sadly, insecurity has been on the rise across our communities, fear and uncertainty have taken root as businesses suffer, families mourn and our collective peace remains under siege.

“What makes this situation even more distressing is the growing suspicion that some unscrupulous politicians are fueling this crisis for their own selfish political gains, especially as we approach the 2027 elections,” he said.

According to Adodo, “ Credible intelligence and troubling reports at our disposal suggest that some politicians are actively sponsoring violence, arming criminal bandits, and manipulating public sentiment to undermine the government of President Bola Tinubu.

“Let me state unequivocally that insecurity must never be weaponized for anybody’s political ambition.

Those using chaos and anarchy as a strategy to discredit the administration and advance their own political interests ahead of the 2027 general elections should desist forthwith,” Adodo said

The CSOs criticised politicians who prioritise power over the lives of citizens, adding that, “such antics betray the very essence of leadership and the renewed hope agenda of the current administration”.

While demanding accountability, the group commended the Nigerian armed forces, defence chiefs, Nigerians and all stakeholders for their untiring efforts and commitment towards ensuring a peaceful and stable Nigeria.

“We demand justice and accountability. Nigerians need answers. Those found complicit in these heinous acts must face the full wrath of the law, regardless of their status, affiliation or political inclination.

“Amidst these sponsored challenges, we must also recognise and commend the bravery and sacrifice of our armed forces, the men and women of the military, police, and other agencies who put their lives on the line daily to protect us.

“We equally commend the commitment of the Chief of Defence Staff, Lt. Gen. Christopher Musa and the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede, who have made significant strides in dismantling terrorist networks, neutralising bandits, and destroying operational bases of ISWAP/Boko Haram.

“Despite being overstretched, and sometimes unfairly criticised, they have continued to fight on the frontlines to restore peace. Their dedication, amidst limited resources and undue criticism, remains a beacon of hope. We owe them our gratitude, our support, and better resources to carry out their duties effectively”, they added.

They called on Nigerians to “reject divisive politics and refuse to be manipulated by politicians who thrive on chaos,” stating further that “since security is a collective responsibility, those with credible intelligence should support security agencies to fast-track the fight against insecurity.”
