The Bundies Care Support Initiative and a coalition of civil society organisations (CSOs), have hailed the move by the Kwara State House of Assembly to ban vape use by youths.

The executive director of Bundies Care Support Initiative and member of Protecting and Activating Communities against Tobacco (PACT), Mrs. Funmilayo Osiegbu, made the commendation during a chat with LEADERSHIP in Ilorin.

The member representing Ilorin East at the Kwara State House of Assembly, Hon. Arinola  Lawal, had last Thursday moved a motion on the need to ban vape or e- cigarette use by the youths.

She  expressed deep concern over the rising trend of e-cigarette use among youths in the state.

Lawal outlined how vaping, initially introduced as a cessation aid for smokers, has now become a socially acceptable and discreet habit among adolescents, driven by sleek designs, flavoured options, and ease of access.

She said that vaping devices often contain carcinogens and other harmful substances, increasing the risk of cancer, heart and lung diseases, and mental health challenges like anxiety and depression.

For her part, Osiegbu,  described  the lawmakers decision to enact a bill banning sale of vape and electronic cigarette to young children as a right step in the right direction.

She described vape or electronic-cigarette as a device that simulates smoking, whereby the user inhales vapour.
