The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has alleged that there is a plan to frame a prominent opposition lawmaker with fabricated charges.
CUPP claims that Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, spokesman for a group of 60 opposition lawmakers, is being targeted due to his stance on the political crisis in Rivers State and his advocacy for democracy.
The coalition, representing opposition parties in Nigeria, has called on the Inspector General of Police and the Federal Capital Territory police commissioner to investigate the matter.
In a statement, CUPP spokesman Mark Adebayo said the group had received intelligence about the alleged plot and warned that any attempt to frame Ugochinyere would bring much public disdain and condemnation.
The statement praised Ugochinyere’s pro-democracy efforts, describing him as a long-standing activist and member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). CUPP said Ugochinyere’s advocacy should be applauded as actions in defence of public interest and Nigeria’s stability.
