The 39th African Women’s Volleyball Inter-Club Championship commenced on Thursday evening with inspiring remarks from Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, the comptroller-general of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS). Taking place in Abuja, the event not only showcases volleyball talent but also celebrates the resilience and triumph of women in the face of adversity.
Adeniyi emphasised the significance of the championship, stating that it stands as a testament to the determination and hard work of countless female athletes. “Today, we gather not merely to witness a tournament, but to celebrate the culmination of hours of sacrifice, determination, and unwavering commitment,” he declared to the vibrant crowd assembled at the Indoor Sports Hall of Moshood Abiola National Sports Stadium for opening ceremony.
He highlighted the impactful journeys of female athletes in Nigeria, referencing inspirational figures such as Chioma Ajunwa and Asisat Oshoala. Ajunwa made history as the first Nigerian woman to win an Olympic gold medal, while Oshoala has become a household name, having been crowned African Women’s Footballer of the Year on six occasions.
Adeniyi underscored the importance of these role models in inspiring future generations.
Among the stories shared was that of Superintendent Chinedu Odozor, whose journey from challenging beginnings to becoming a national coach exemplifies the transformative power of sport. Adeniyi recounted how Odozor, despite facing adversity, found her way to success through resilience and determination, emerging as a two-time Olympian and a champion in sprints and hurdles.
“The path to excellence is rarely straight or smooth,” Adeniyi noted, encouraging the athletes to embrace the lessons learned from volleyball—success arises from the courage to rise after setbacks and the power of teamwork. “Your presence here shatters ceilings and builds bridges,” he urged, reminding the competitors that their performance extends beyond personal achievement, inspiring young girls who dare to dream big.
Adeniyi also acknowledged the broader context of the championship, coinciding with International Women’s Day and Mother’s Day, reinforcing the message that the world is ready for women to thrive. He encouraged spectators to actively engage in celebrating female excellence, emphasising the importance of supporting young women within their communities.
In a heartfelt conclusion, Adeniyi expressed gratitude to the Grand Patron of the championship, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her unwavering support and commitment to women’s empowerment. He commended her efforts in inspiring millions of women across Nigeria to pursue their dreams and break barriers.
As the championship unfolds over the next two weeks, the words of CGC Bashir Adeniyi resonate: this tournament is not merely a competition but a declaration that the time for women to shine is now, with impacts destined to echo far beyond the final whistle.
