The comptroller-general of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adeniyi, has declared investment in classroom infrastructure as a strategic investment in Nigeria’s intellectual capital and long-term national development.
Adeniyi stated this yesterday in Maigatari, Jigawa State, during the inauguration of renovated facilities at Alhassan Primary School under the Service’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, Customs Care.
He said the intervention reflects the Service’s commitment to expanding its impact beyond revenue generation, trade facilitation and border security to direct community development.
“By investing in classroom infrastructure, we are investing in the intellectual capital of Nigeria,” he said, stressing that education remains the bedrock of economic growth, social stability and national cohesion.
The project involved the renovation of classroom blocks, the construction of 16 ventilated improved pit latrines, the installation of desks, the establishment of a botanical garden, and the provision of a solar-powered borehole to enhance water supply and sanitation.
The Service also distributed over 1,800 educational materials to pupils to support effective learning.
Adeniyi explained that the Customs Care initiative, launched in 2025, operates on six pillars—education, healthcare, social investment, environmental sustainability, food security, and support for the creative economy—designed to deliver structured, measurable social interventions nationwide.
Describing Maigatari as a strategic border community, Adeniyi noted that strengthening educational infrastructure in such areas would promote responsible citizenship and sustainable development. He further pledged to support the construction of a perimeter fence to improve security within the school premises.
Governor Umar Namadi, represented by the commissioner for Budget and Planning, Babangida Umar, commended the initiative, describing it as complementary to the state government’s development agenda.
He urged the school authorities to ensure proper maintenance of the facilities, adding that the state government would undertake tree planting to beautify the environment and enhance learning conditions.
