While most his contemporaries place their wealth in the spotlight, Alhaji Dahiru Barau Mangal, a billionaire businessman, has chosen a more humane path – philanthropy.

This Katsina-born businessman and aviation magnate is one of Nigeria’s most influential yet least publicised billionaires. Although he is mostly identified as the founder of Max Air, to hundreds of beneficiaries of his large heart and care, he is the man who gives.

For decades, Mangal has built a reputation for philanthropy that spans education, healthcare, religion, and humanitarian support. His interventions in communities, particularly in Katsina State and other parts of northern Nigeria, have earned him uncommon respect.

Mangal has funded the construction of schools, mosques, boreholes and healthcare facilities and also provided scholarships and financial support to vulnerable families.

Unlike many wealthy individuals who publicise their charitable activities, Mangal allows his deeds to speak for him. Community leaders and beneficiaries often recount stories of assistance he provided without publicity. His philanthropy has become an extension of his personal philosophy that wealth should serve society.

Mangal began his entrepreneurial journey at a young age. His business interests initially revolved around commodity trading, transportation and logistics. Through persistence, discipline and an eye for opportunity, he gradually built an extensive business empire.

His biggest breakthrough came in the aviation sector in 2008 when he founded Max Air as a domestic airline and later expanded it into international operations. The airline has since then established itself as one of Nigeria’s major carriers, serving several domestic destinations and operating international flights, particularly for religious pilgrimages to Saudi Arabia.

Under Mangal’s leadership, Max Air has become a major player in Nigeria’s aviation industry, transporting thousands of pilgrims annually for Hajj and Umrah operations, earning a reputation for reliability in the religious travel sector. The airline’s expansion into scheduled commercial services further strengthened its position within the industry.

Beyond aviation, Mangal’s business interests extend into oil and gas, transportation, agriculture and construction. The Mangal Group has grown into a diversified conglomerate with investments that contribute to employment generation and economic development.

One of his most ambitious ventures is the Mangal Cement project in Iluagba, Kogi State. The multi-billion-naira investment is expected to boost industrialisation, create jobs and stimulate economic activities in northern Nigeria. The project reflects his commitment to investing in industries capable of transforming local economies.

Despite his enormous wealth and influence, Mangal remains remarkably private. He rarely grants interviews, avoids excessive publicity and maintains a low profile compared to many of his contemporaries. This reserved nature has contributed to an aura of mystery around him, making him one of Nigeria’s least understood billionaires.

Yet his influence extends beyond business. Political leaders, traditional rulers and community organisations frequently acknowledge his contributions to social development.

His support for educational institutions, youth empowerment programmes, and community development initiatives has positively affected the lives of thousands.

Those who know him describe him as disciplined, humble and deeply committed to his roots. Even as his business empire expanded nationally and internationally, he maintained strong ties with his home state and continued investing in local communities.

His success story illustrates the power of patience, strategic investment and quiet determination. Unlike entrepreneurs who seek immediate recognition, Mangal built his enterprises steadily over several decades, emphasising sustainability and long-term growth.
