The DAM Foundation is intensifying efforts to strengthen grassroots basketball in Nigeria through court construction, competitions and welfare programmes aimed at creating more opportunities for young players.
The foundation, associated with Dr Mustapha Abdullahi, said its interventions are focused on strengthening the development pathway for young basketball players, particularly through access to facilities, regular competition and mentorship.
Abdullahi, who has been involved in basketball for more than a decade as a player and supporter, said the challenges facing Nigerian basketball at the elite level could not be addressed without investing in the grassroots.
He said young players need functional facilities, competitive opportunities and proper guidance to develop their talents and progress in the sport.
His involvement in basketball predates his appointment as Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria. He previously played for teams in Kano State and has supported basketball teams and grassroots communities over the years.
In Kano, Abdullahi supported the construction of a basketball court and sponsored a tournament, including the logistics required to stage the competition.
The DAM Foundation also organises an annual basketball championship in Okene, Kogi State, every December.
According to the foundation, the tournament provides young players with an opportunity to compete, gain experience and attract attention, while promoting community engagement through basketball.
Its interventions also extend beyond the court, with the foundation citing medical assistance, scholarships, business grants and other support for young people and vulnerable members of communities among its programmes.
Employment facilitation and personal welfare assistance have also featured in its activities.
In Abuja, Abdullahi has supported the Great Vibes Basketball Foundation (GVBF) team, including assistance with players’ welfare and personal challenges.
He said developing athletes should involve attention to their welfare alongside sporting performance.
Abdullahi also identified infrastructure as a key component of grassroots development, noting that properly maintained courts can provide young people with spaces to train, compete and develop their abilities.
The foundation’s programmes focus on talent identification, competitions, infrastructure, mentorship, welfare and empowerment.
Abdullahi said grassroots basketball should also serve as a platform for youth development by keeping young people engaged and creating pathways to education, employment and other opportunities beyond sport.
