The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ambassador Umar Damagum, has raised alarm over what he described as growing threats to Nigeria’s democratic system.
Damagum who spoke with journalists in Bauchi yesterday, said preparations for the party’s forthcoming national convention were progressing smoothly.
He described the convention as a key step towards reinforcing party unity, refocusing its direction, and restoring public confidence in democratic governance, while assuring citizens that the PDP is fully prepared to rescue the nation from misgovernance.
According to him, the party has constituted various committees to ensure a peaceful and transparent convention, adding that most internal disagreements within the party have been resolved to enable delegates to concentrate on shaping a collective vision for the future.
The national chairman also said the convention will serve as a defining moment for the PDP, an opportunity to reposition the party ahead of future elections and reconnect with Nigerians who are yearning for credible political alternatives.
Ambassador Damagum further appealed to citizens, party supporters, and stakeholders to rally behind the PDP’s objectives, stressing that unity and active participation are vital to strengthen the decisions that will emerge from the convention.
He reaffirmed the party’s determination to present a clear agenda that addresses governance failures, insecurity, and economic hardship, noting that the PDP remains committed to providing Nigerians with a credible leadership alternative.
“The PDP, as a major opposition party with national reach, is positioned to safeguard democracy, defend the rights of citizens, and ensure accountability in governance,” Damagum stated.
He assured that the party would continue engaging its members and supporters nationwide to sustain momentum before and after the convention, emphasising that dialogue and inclusivity are essential for strengthening internal democracy.
Observing that Nigeria’s democracy is currently facing unprecedented challenges arising from governance failures, insecurity, and worsening economic conditions, he stressed the need for urgent political intervention to restore citizens’ confidence in democratic institutions.
“Democracy thrives only when citizens defend it. The PDP will continue to engage Nigerians across all levels to ensure that our democratic system is protected, strengthened, and responsive to the needs of the people,” he noted.
