Darkness Across Nigeria Not Just Failure, But Disempowerment Tool – NLC

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has decried the worsening electricity supply across the country, describing the situation as a “weapon of mass disempowerment” against Nigerians.

NLC President, Joe Ajaero, made this known on Saturday, highlighting the severe impact of dwindling power supply on workers and the broader economy.

Ajaero said the rising cost of transportation has already placed a heavy burden on Nigerian workers, compounding their daily struggles.

“Today, the soaring cost of transportation is a heavy yoke on the necks of workers. It devours our wages, steals our time, and reduces our existence to a daily struggle for survival,” he said.

He added that the persistent electricity crisis goes beyond technical failure.

“The absence of electricity, inducing darkness across the nation, is not merely a technical failure; it is a weapon of mass disempowerment. It cripples our industries, kills small businesses, and plunges homes into darkness, making it impossible for the working class to live with dignity,” Ajaero stated.

The labour leader called on the government to address the challenges facing Nigerians through people-oriented policies.

“We demand that the pains of today be transformed into victory for the people through the implementation of policies that restore public transportation, end the electricity crisis, stop the killings, and place the welfare of the masses above the profits of a privileged few,” he said.

He further urged for more responsive governance, warning against the misuse of state power.

“We demand a more humane and responsive governance anchored on the people. The use of state power to suppress workers’ rights, silence dissent, or impose austerity that benefits a tiny elite while crushing the majority is a betrayal of leadership,” he added.

In his Easter message to Nigerian workers, Ajaero expressed hope for a better future, drawing parallels with the resurrection of Christ.

“The resurrection of Jesus Christ is a demonstration of triumph. Just as Christ emerged victorious, so shall Nigerian workers emerge from poverty, exploitation, and bad governance. That triumph, however, will not come by waiting but through collective struggle and solidarity,” he said.

He reaffirmed the NLC’s commitment to advocating for workers’ welfare and equitable distribution of national resources.
“We wish all Nigerian Christians and indeed all Nigerians a Happy Easter. Let this season renew our commitment to justice, liberty, and a nation where prosperity is the birthright of every citizen,” Ajaero added.
