The 2023 Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has revealed that he was set to leave the Labour Party (LP) in few hours time and join the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) on Wednesday morning.

Datti Baba-Ahmed made the revelation on Tuesday night during an appearance on ‘Politics Today’, a current affairs programme on Channels Television.

LEADERSHIP recalls that Datti Baba-Ahmed was the running mate to the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in the last general election.

Incidentally, his planned destination – PRP – is currently headed by his older brother, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, as the party’s national chairman.

Speaking on his defection, he explained that the decision stemmed from internal disagreements within the Labour Party, which he said were as a result of straying away from its founding ideals.

“I am leaving the Labour Party tomorrow [Wednesday]. There is more to it. When there was real peace in the Labour Party, was when they posted back. They redeployed someone with a specific purpose, and because of the antecedent of the individual to make life difficult, particularly for me. What the Labour Party stood for then is no longer what it is today,” he said.

Datti Baba-Ahmed added that his exit from the party would take effect at midnight on Tuesday, stressing that his next political destination was the PRP.

“I am leaving the Labour Party [at] midnight, and I am joining PRP. PRP is the new destination. PRP is the one with a history. It’s about 75 years old,” he stated.
