The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun on Saturday visited the family of 35-year-old Jimoh Abdulquadri, who reportedly died in police custody in Ilorin, Kwara State.

At the palace of Balogun Fulani, the traditional ruler of the community from which the victim hailed, Egbetokun pleaded with the community’s people, especially the youths, not to take the law into their own hands.

He disclosed that he had directed a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Abdulquadri.

Egbetokun assured that the matter would not be swept under the carpet, saying, “Justice would be served.”

“I am very saddened to be here today on a condolence visit on the death of Jimoh. The circumstances surrounding his death are very worrisome.

“Justice must be served. I have already directed the investigation. I have given a necessary directive to the CP here. We will get to the root of this case,” he assured.

However, he cautioned the community against rushing to conclusions, saying, “Let us not jump to a conclusion. I have visited the command and directed a thorough investigation.”

Egbetokun said the police would support the family of the deceased, adding,” We’re ready to support the family of the deceased. We know no support will ease their pains, but we are sure our efforts will go a long way. I pray that no sad story will bring me to Kwara State again.”

LEADERSHIP gathered that Abdulqudri was arrested by the policemen on December 19, 2024, for allegedly owing a co-worker the sum of N220,000 while he reportedly died on December 20, 2024, while in police custody.

Meanwhile, the Emir of Ilorin, Alh Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, has expressed sadness over the death of Abdulqudri in police custody.

The Emir, in a statement signed by his spokesman, Mal AbdulAzeez Arowona, said: “This is a rude shock and regrettable incident, seeing a promising young man die in such an inhumane situation.”

He advised security agencies always to ensure professionalism and compliance with global practices in their duties.
