There is unease in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State as a result of an abandoned decomposing body of man, four days after its discovery along Spera-In-Deo axis of Onwe Road.
Residents and business owners in the area expressed concern over the inability of the relevant authorities to evacuate the body despite collecting N2,000 per shop to enable them evacuate the corpse.
The business owners lamented that over 50 shops at Spera-In-Deo plaza, a popular petrol station, over 20 shops at Tycoon Plaza, eateries, parks and other offices along the axis had all shut down following as a result of the decomposing body.
Speaking to LEADERSHIP on behalf of other business and office owners, chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Ebonyi State, Comrade Uchenna Inya, described it as regrettable that between Saturday and yesterday, no effort was made to evacuate the corpse.
“Some officials of the ministry came and requested that we contribute N2000 each from shop and office to enable them evacuate the decomposing corpse but after collecting the money, they refused to do anything to that effect,” he said.
When contacted, an official of the Ministry of Environment who spoke to LEADERSHIP said it was the responsibility of the Ministry of Health to evacuate the corpse.
