The Chief Judge of Delta State, Justice Tessy Diai, has released seven awaiting inmates during the first quarter visits to custodial centres across the state.
Those set free from the Ogwashi-Uku Correctional Centre are, Yohanna Selnan, John Tanko, Gwakman, Ventim Usman and Chukwuemeka Ugwu, all male.
While addressing stakeholders at the Ogwashi Uku Custodial Centre, she explained that the inmate’s release was based on the legal advice of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Mr Anthony Ogheneovo Orhorhorho, that the inmates had no case to answer.
The Delta Chief Judge giving the summary of the exercise, which began in Warri Correctional Centre, said the visit commenced on 10th March 2025, with a total of 350 Warrants reviewed and one person regaining freedom in that Centre.
She added that in Sapele, 138 Warrants were reviewed non released while in Sapele’s remand Home, 10 Warrants were reviewed, non-released while at Kwale, and 181 were reviewed with one person breathing the air of freedom for the first time after spending reasonable time behind bars on arson and kidnapping charges.
She explained further that at Agbor, 135 Warrants were reviewed and not released, which climaxed the exercise at Ogwashi-Uku later that day, where a total of 428 Warrants were reviewed, with five persons regaining freedom, bringing the total to 1,228 Inmate Warrants reviewed with non-granted bail across the state.
The Chief Judge appreciated everyone who participated in the exercise in the state, including the DPP and his team, for their diligence and hard work, which translated into faster and smoother justice dispensation in the state.
Mr Chukwuemeka Ugwu said he was arrested for the crime of robbery and kidnapping, which he knew nothing about.
The five people released appreciated the chief judge for setting them free while praying that God Almighty would continue to keep her alive to continue her good works for humanity.
