The Niger Delta Sports Festival (NDSF) Torch made a notable stop in Asaba on Wednesday, where Governor Sheriff Oborevwori affirmed his administration’s unwavering dedication to grassroots sports development and youth engagement.

In a rallying call, he urged Team Delta to reclaim the state’s revered position in sports during the inaugural games set to take place in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Governor Oborevwori, represented by Mr. Charles Aniagwu, the State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, commended the leadership of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for initiating this innovative Sports Festival.

While receiving the torch, he emphasised Delta State’s historic prowess in national sports competitions, stating, “I have no doubt that we will reclaim the number one spot by the time the competition concludes in Uyo.”

He further elaborated that the presentation of the festival torch signifies much more than just the commencement of an exciting sports event; it stands as a symbol of unity, resilience, and the vast potential of the Niger Delta region.

“Just as we are blessed with oil, which is a cornerstone of the Nigerian economy, we are equally blessed with extraordinary talents that have showcased our country to the world,” the Governor declared.

Earlier, Onoriode Oborevwori, Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, underscored the state’s readiness for the games, scheduled from April 1 to April 8.

“Our thorough selection process involved state trials, where the best athletes were handpicked and invited to a dedicated training camp. This rigorous preparation ensures that only the most talented and committed athletes represent Delta State at the festival, competing across 17 sporting events in Uyo,” he explained.

He concluded with optimism, stating, “We hope our athletes will leave a remarkable legacy and make Delta State proud by excelling in the games.”

The excitement builds as the countdown to the NDSF begins, with the hope of showcasing the incredible athletic talents of the region!
