Delta State has taken a significant step towards empowering its youth by launching the “Scouts for SDGs” Summer Camp, which commenced on Monday.

The four-day event at the picturesque Valley Stream British Schools in Sapele gathered enthusiastic scouts from Delta State and beyond for a unique blend of education, leadership training, and enjoyable activities focused on sustainable development and community engagement.

The camp’s opening ceremony attracted distinguished guests, highlighting the event’s importance. Notably, the First Lady of Delta State, Her Excellency Mrs. Tobore Oborevwori, was represented by Dcns Eunice Anirah is the special adviser to the governor on women’s development. In her remarks, Dcns Anirah emphasised the vital role of youth in achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and lauded the organisers for their initiative.

Her Royal Highness, The Olori Atuwatse III of Warri Kingdom, who served as the camp’s Chief Sponsor, delivered an inspiring address that resonated with the young attendees. She stressed the importance of character development rooted in ethics and culture.

Support for the camp was also evident from the Orodje of Okpe Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Major General Felix Mujakperuo (retd.), who, although unable to attend, sent a message through Traditional Prime Minister Okakuro Mike Affe, encouraging scouts to embrace the knowledge shared during the camp.

The event featured notable educational contributions from Prof. Doris Ogeleka, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun (FUPRE). She urged participants to be proactive in applying the principles of the SDGs in their lives.
