The David Mark-led African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Tuesday held its 8th National Convention in Abuja amid strong warnings against what it described as intimidation by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The convention drew several high-profile political figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; former APC National Chairman, John Oyegun; former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi; leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso; and Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal.

Declaring the convention open, the party’s National Chairman, David Mark, said the ADC would not bow to what he described as “tyranny and political pressure” allegedly being mounted by the ruling party.

He stressed that the ADC would not stand by and watch democracy erode through what he described as the systematic weakening of democratic institutions under the current administration.

“Democracy will not die on our watch. We will not be intimidated by manipulation or political manoeuvring targeted at our party and, indeed, Nigerians,” he said.

The former Senate President praised party members and officials for remaining steadfast despite what he termed sustained harassment and political setbacks.

Mark noted that he was particularly encouraged by the party’s ability to overcome obstacles placed in its path, including the initial denial of the National Stadium as the convention venue and attempts to disrupt the event at its eventual location.

He urged members to remain focused and resolute in their commitment to building a new Nigeria despite the challenges.

“Let us remain resolute in our determination to rescue this country from the misrule of the APC and earn a place in the good books of history and future generations,” Senator Mark stated
