The Danish government is set to launch a new legislative bid to ban the Islamic call to prayer (Adhan) nationwide, citing concerns over the use of public space in a secular society.

The country’s Business Minister, Morten Bodskov, announced that the government would reopen an investigation into outlawing the broadcast summons. He stated that the traditional five-times-daily prayer broadcast from mosques does not align with the country’s public landscape.

“The call to prayer should not be heard over Danish rooftops. It has no place in Denmark, and you shouldn’t be in any doubt whether you’ve ended up in a suburb of Islamabad when you walk around Denmark,” Bodskov stated.

This development marks the third attempt by Danish authorities to implement a legal ban, following unsuccessful legislative efforts in 2020 and 2025.

Currently, certain municipalities in Denmark already enforce restrictions on the broadcasts. In Copenhagen, strict local noise regulations effectively prevent the use of outdoor loudspeakers on minarets, while the Grand Mosque of Copenhagen voluntarily refrains from outdoor broadcasts under a local community agreement.
