The Defence Industries Association of Nigeria (DIAN) has unveiled a new strategy aimed at strengthening local defence manufacturing and reducing Nigeria’s dependence on foreign military equipment.

The resolution was reached at the association’s General Meeting held on May 13 in Abuja and contained in a communiqué signed by its General Secretary, Engr. Kola Balogun, and released on Friday in Abuja.

DIAN said the initiative is designed to accelerate self-reliance in defence production through enhanced indigenous capacity, innovation, and industrial collaboration.

The association identified the full implementation of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) Act 2023 as central to achieving this goal, noting that the law provides a framework for local manufacturing, technology transfer, reduced import dependence, foreign exchange conservation, and job creation.

DIAN disclosed that it had admitted more than 18 new members, describing the development as a sign of growing investor confidence in Nigeria’s defence industrial sector.

It added that it is developing a coordinated strategy to deepen synergy among stakeholders and advise government on policies aimed at reducing reliance on imported military hardware.

According to the association, the initiative would strengthen supply chains, attract investment, and support ongoing efforts to address insecurity across the country.

However, DIAN identified weak coordination within the defence industrial ecosystem as a major challenge, calling for stronger institutional alignment and improved policy execution.

As part of internal reforms, the association announced the dissolution of its pioneer executive council and trustees, with fresh elections scheduled for July 2026.

It also adopted its constitution to guide operations and enhance transparency and accountability.

DIAN urged members to participate in the African International Defence Exhibition (AFRIDEX), scheduled to hold from October 26 to 29, 2026, in Lagos.

The association said the event would provide a platform to showcase Nigeria’s expanding defence manufacturing capacity.

DIAN reaffirmed its commitment to building a resilient and globally competitive military-industrial complex, noting that the new direction would drive local procurement, create jobs, and strengthen national security capabilities.
