Media personality and actor Victor Nwaogu, popularly known as Nkubi, and his wife, Vivian, have raised concerns over alleged discrimination within Nigeria’s healthcare system following a controversial remark made by a medical doctor to the wife during her pregnancy.
Vivian made the revelation during an interview on Pulse One-on-One, where she recounted her experience while undergoing an anomaly scan.
According to her, the incident occurred after she presented her scan results to a doctor, who inquired about a family history of dwarfism.
She said, “When I did my anomaly scan and handed it to the doctor, he was like, ‘Does anyone have a trait of dwarfism in your family?’ Then I said, ‘Yes. It is my husband.’”
Vivian disclosed that the conversation took an unexpected turn when the doctor allegedly questioned her decision to conceive with her husband.
“The doctor reportedly asked, ‘Why didn’t you go to your brother-in-law or even go outside to get pregnant instead of getting pregnant for your husband, or even get a sperm donor?’ And yes, that is what a doctor told me. They are not giving equal rights in this country at all,” she said.
The media personality described the comment as insensitive and discriminatory, suggesting that persons living with dwarfism face prejudice, even within professional healthcare settings.
Her disclosure has since sparked conversations on social media about medical ethics, patients’ rights, and discrimination against persons with disabilities in Nigeria.
Nkubi, a popular Nollywood actor and content creator, has been open about living with dwarfism and has often advocated for inclusion and equal rights.
The development has reignited calls for improved sensitivity training for healthcare professionals and stronger enforcement of disability rights protections in the country.
