A non-governmental organization, Sight Savers, has trained 24 medical doctors in six states on the management and surgery of persons suffering from enlargement of the scrotum also known as hydrocele.

The training which held in Makurdi, Benue State, is to be followed by surgery practicals at the Makurdi General Hospital co-sponsored by Sight Savers which is working in the state for the eradication of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Human Services.

Speaking to our correspondent after the training, the senior program manager Sight Savers, Mrs Anita Gwom, said hydrocele is a disease that arises from the complication of lymphatic filariasis.

“Sight Savers has been using so many strategies like mass drug administration, integrated vector control disease management and disability inclusion to enable members of endemic communities live healthy and normal lives,” she said.

Mrs Gwom who commended the Benue State government for its support to end NTDs in the state said Sight Savers was poised to end Neglected Tropical Diseases by the year 2030.

She said; “This training of doctors across the six states of Benue, Kogi, Zamfara, Kebbi, Sokoto and Kaduna was put in place to ensure that doctors in these highly endemic states are up to date with the management and surgery of hydrocele for enhanced health care delivery in the country.

“We have been given mass drugs but now, we want to address the complications that rise from the infection which is usually the enlargement of the scrotum known as hydrocele and it is different from hernia,” she added.
