At least one person died, nine people were in critical condition following a devastating train collision near Bedford in the United Kingdom that left 99 passengers injured, authorities have confirmed.

The crash, described as Britain’s worst rail disaster in two decades in terms of casualties, has prompted an urgent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

British Transport Police said nine passengers were still fighting for their lives, while three others sustained very serious injuries. Official figures showed that 32 passengers suffered serious injuries and 56 sustained minor injuries.

Passengers recounted harrowing scenes following the collision, with some describing the aftermath as resembling the aftermath of a bomb explosion.

One of the passengers, Brett Byatt, told BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme that the vast majority of people in his carriage were injured.

“I’d probably say 90 per cent of the people on my carriage had injuries. I’d probably say from three to four of us were uninjured in a full carriage,” he said.

“Everyone else had either a serious wound that was bleeding profusely, or a situation where they couldn’t stand, or couldn’t move their neck, or I saw a woman’s snapped leg.”

Byatt said there was a loud “boom” before passengers were thrown into one another.

He also criticised the train’s interior design, saying, “The way that they’re structured with seats was probably the worst way it could have been structured for a train crash.”

Another passenger, Pete Knapp, described the impact as catastrophic.

“The front carriage collided into the front of another one and when I got up I saw all of the chairs everywhere and it felt like I’d been in a bomb explosion,” he told BBC News.

“When I got up I saw people with bloodied faces and people’s legs looked broken and there was smoke everywhere. I didn’t hear any explosions or slowing down of the train.”

“Some people were spitting out blood. Lots of people are sat down. I can’t sit down because my back hurts so much,” he added.

Teresa Itabor, who was travelling to London to celebrate her birthday, said: “We left Bedford station and there was a massive bang. I didn’t know what was going on. My head hit the seat in front of me.”

Another passenger, Simon Bentley, who was travelling with his wife, said they were grateful to have survived.

“I think we’re actually just really relieved that we’re both still here. We’re very lucky and obviously very, very sad about what’s happened to the driver,” he said.

The deceased driver was operating the 4:40 p.m. Corby service to London St Pancras, according to the train drivers’ union, ASLEF.

ASLEF General Secretary Dave Calfe said the entire railway community would be mourning the loss.

“The whole railway network will be feeling the sadness and sorrow of his death,” Calfe said.

A spokesperson for Network Rail also expressed condolences, stating: “We’re deeply saddened that a railway colleague has tragically died following the incident near Bedford. Our thoughts are with their family, friends and colleagues, and with everyone affected.”

Britain’s King Charles III said he was “greatly saddened” by the tragedy, with Buckingham Palace stating that the monarch’s thoughts and sympathies were with the victim’s family and all those affected.

Authorities have launched a full-scale investigation into the cause of the collision.

Railway expert Phil Haigh said safety systems on Britain’s rail network are generally highly reliable and expressed surprise that such an accident occurred.

“Unless there was a fault with the signalling system, or unless the driver passed a red signal,” Haigh said, adding that he was “mystified” by the crash.

Rail journalist Tony Miles also questioned how the collision occurred.

“So, the question has to be how has that train that’s in the rear got into contact with the train that it was following,” Miles told Sky News.

“Obviously it’s either gone past the signal that was telling it it should stop, or the signal was faulty, or the driver’s made a mistake in some way, or didn’t read the signal.”

According to officials, the first train, a 3:50 p.m. service from Nottingham to London St Pancras, had stopped because of a safety fault and was running 18 minutes behind schedule.

The second train, the 4:40 p.m. Corby service, which had departed Bedford station minutes earlier, subsequently collided with the rear of the stationary train.

Chief Constable Lucy D’Orsi praised emergency responders and local residents who assisted stranded passengers after the crash.

“Specialist investigators from the British Transport Police are working with colleagues at the Rail Accident Investigation Branch to gather facts and determine what happened,” she said.

Photographs from the scene showed extensive damage to one of the driver’s compartments, while emergency services treated casualties in nearby fields. Several of the most seriously injured passengers were airlifted to hospitals by air ambulances.

The Bedford collision is being described as the most serious rail accident in Britain since the 2007 Grayrigg derailment in Cumbria, which left one person dead and 89 others injured.
